S. Joe McCord Library Hero Award


Purpose


The Texas Library Political Action Committee (TLPAC) will recognize sustained, ongoing, and/or outstanding achievement(s) by an individual or a group in support of legislative efforts on behalf of Texas libraries, librarians, and library programs.

 

 

Frequency


The Executive Board of the TLPAC will award the McCord Library Hero Award as Texas Library Heroes arise.

 

Presentation of Award


Representatives of the TLPAC Executive Board will present the McCord Library Hero Award (s) at TLA Annual Assembly.

 

Nominating Process


All nominees for the McCord Library Hero Award are to be submitted in writing to the Executive Board of the TLPAC through tlpac.org.


Any member of the TLPAC may submit nominations.  Making an annual contribution to the TLPAC attains membership in TLPAC.


Nominations and the selection process will follow a calendar specified by the TLPAC Executive Board.  The deadline for nominations is July 1.  Nomination form (in Microsoft Word)Nomination form (in Adobe PDF).

 

Characteristics/Qualifications of a McCord Library Hero

 

The McCord Library Hero Award seeks to recognize efforts of an individual or a group related either to a specific legislative effort or piece of proposed library-related legislation during a specific Texas State Legislative Session or to recognize ongoing, sustained efforts that when taken in their entirety presents high levels of dedication to the legislative programs of the Texas Library Association.



 
McCord Library Hero Award Presented to Susan Mann - July 10, 2014

The fourth S. Joe McCord Library Hero Award was presented to Susan Mann at the Texas Library Association's Annual Assembly on July 10, 2014.  Susan is a long-time library advocate, director of the Hillsboro City Library, former chair of the Texas Library Association Legislative Committee, and currently is president elect of TLA.

First Three McCord Library Hero Awards Presented


2013 Awards

The first three S. Joe McCord Library Hero Awards were presented at the Texas Library Association's Annual Assembly in Austin on July 9, 2013. Recipients are:
  • State Representative Jim Pitts (District 10)
  • Rhoda Goldberg, library advocate; former chair of the Texas Library Association Legislative Committee; coordinator of the Texas delegation to the annual National Library Legislative Day
  • Cyd Sheffy, library advocate; former president of Texas Library Political Action Committee
